What will happen if Ofcom stop revenue payments to Telcos
@ 2005-07-22 - 19:02:26I've heard that it's in the pipeline for Ofcom to change the pricing for calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers, to bring them in line with other STD 01 and 02 prefixed numbers, and also to stop call revenue payments to Telcos - the money that keeps these companies in business!
In a recent survey by Ofcom, users of 0845 and 0870 numbers were asked whether they would miss the revenue they earned from calls to their number if payments were stopped - the survey failed to ask whether owners of these numbers whether they would be prepared to pay 3 or 4p a minute to receive calls via their 0845 or 0870 numbers - a service most owners currently enjoy for nothing per minute.
I agree that Government agencies should not be profitting from using 0870 numbers, although I don't think that the general tax payer should be footing the cost either - an 0845 number would surely be more agreeable to everyone.
